Maryland brought us crab cakes, and Québec the original poutine. Legend has it the Baltic village of Keila, tiny as it was, brought us a dairy delight that is now enjoyed by families all over Europe.
Since the early 1700s, villagers in Keila have been providing milk to families in northern Estonia. As cattle stocks grew and local dairy businesses began to boom, the villagers often had a surplus of milk that would otherwise be left to spoil. Not content to let the extra milk go to waste, a local woman with a knack for creative cooking turned that extra milk into bars of cheese curd and dipped them in chocolate. The tasty treat was naturally well received by her family, who happily devoured her delicious creations. The very next winter, the family packed a horse cart full of the cheese bars and brought them to the neighbouring villages.
The recipe was kept a secret, and was not revealed until generations later, when a Keila family decided to share their creation with the world. Wholesome and delicious, the sweet cheese bars grew in popularity, and quickly became a favourite of families all over the Baltics, Europe and Russia.
Three hundred years later, these tasty cheese delicacies are as popular as ever in Russia and Europe, and now, people in Canada and the USA continue to enjoy this tasty snack thanks to Dairylicious.
